Hautes-Pyrénées: Lourdes, Tarbes and the Pic du Midi
Between plain and high peaks, the Hautes-Pyrénées concentrate some of France's most spectacular sites: the Gavarnie cirque, the Pic du Midi, the sanctuary of Lourdes. A practical guide to plan your stay at the foot of the Pyrenees.
Lourdes, much more than a sanctuary
France's second hotel city after Paris, Lourdes welcomes millions of visitors around the Massabielle grotto. Even without a religious motive, the site impresses: stacked basilicas, evening torchlight processions, the fortified castle and its Pyrenean museum. A happy consequence of all that hotel capacity: outside major pilgrimages, prices are among the lowest in France.
Tarbes, gateway to the Pyrenees
Twenty minutes away, Tarbes is the practical stop: the Massey garden and its cloister, the national stud farm, the Marcadieu market hall. It is also the region's cheapest base — the Hôtel des Pyrénées in Odos, on the Tarbes-Lourdes road, offers decent rooms from €35 a night (8.4/10).
The Pic du Midi and the great passes
From La Mongie, a cable car climbs to the Pic du Midi (2,877 m): an astronomical observatory, a walkway in the sky and one of Europe's finest panoramas — book online and watch the weather. Cyclists will take on the mythical Tourmalet and Aspin passes; hikers should aim for the Néouvielle reserve and its high-altitude lakes.
Gavarnie, the stone cathedral
UNESCO-listed, the Gavarnie cirque and its Great Waterfall (423 m, the highest in mainland France) are reached on foot from the village in about 1.5 hours. Leave early — morning light on the limestone tiers is unforgettable.
